INSURRECTION

By Dr. Peter Jones

At the end of 2024, I retired, but I am not unhappy to find myself as temporary Executive Director of truthXchange. I didn’t quite know what to do with myself anyway! I do not forget the importance of the still-helpful distinctions on which the ministry was founded in 2003: the distinction between Oneism (all is one) and Twoism (all is two), which came from the powerful Scripture in Romans 1:25: “They exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever.”

This distinction affects our lives every day. Twoism reminds us of the God who is fundamentally different from us. He has placed distinctions in all of life, beginning with the distinction not only between God and man but also between human and animal, as well as male and female, which many liberals deny. Distinctions make sense of many things, including our political life. But it is crucial to remember that we owe ultimate allegiance to the King of kings. We never have the right of insurrection against our God. In this essay, I hope to analyze the Insurrection Act.

In 1807, then President Thomas Jefferson signed into law the Insurrection Act, designed to handle opposition to valid Presidential authority. Google puts it this way: “Unlawful obstructions, combinations, or assemblages, or rebellion could make it impossible to enforce federal laws.”

For a President to invoke the Insurrection Act represents ultimate political action. George Washington in 1796 advised in his Farewell Address: “the Constitution… is sacredly obligatory upon all. The right of the people to establish government presupposes the duty of every individual to obey the established government.”

The Biden administration refused to enforce U.S. immigration law, and his “border czar,” Kamala Harris, never even showed up at the border, allowing millions of unvetted individuals to enter the country unwisely and illegally. European governments have allowed open-door Islamic migration policies that may well make the native populations less safe and comfortable. One might think that Muslims could assimilate in American society by refusing to impose Sharia Law on the nation. However, all attempts to soften Sharia law fail to silence the violent aspects of Islamic ideology, which cannot assimilate with Western civilization and the American Constitution. As Muhammad said, “Islam must dominate, and not be dominated.”[1]

Elsewhere, radical left-wing politicians reject the federal authority of ICE agents (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). “Mayor Brandon Johnson (D-Chicago) issued an executive order directing City Police to monitor ICE enforcement officers and look for potential felonies that could be prosecuted. He justified this order, saying ‘our state and city are sanctuaries for illegal immigrants. ICE is invading us in an attempt to negate our sovereignty over the areas we rule. We have a right to resist and repel this invasion.’ Gov. JB Pritzker (D-Ill) praised Johnson’s ‘aggressive defense of his city from the unwanted ICE invasion.’ ‘I know the Trump Administration has emphasized that its focus is on so-called ‘criminal illegal aliens’ –those that supposedly have committed crimes other than illegally crossing our borders. Even if that were true, our sanctuary includes all persons being pursued by ICE. Because of their illegal status, normal employment opportunities are scarce. As a result, selling illegal drugs, robbery, rape, and murder have become part of their lifestyle. If the ICE harassment would stop, these individuals could adopt more peaceful ways of life.’”[2]

ICE and Minnesota

Billionaire Tom Steyer, Democrat candidate for California governor, announced that he would jail ICE officers, should he be elected. Federal ICE agents across the country face threats of violence, simply for enforcing federal immigration law. They are encouraged by local radical leaders like Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, who threatens to call out the National Guard to free his state of ICE agents. Trump border czar Tom Homan announced that the administration is prepared to draw on federal forces in Minnesota if the state fails to cooperate. However, it is unlikely that left-wing subversives and insurrectionists will agree to cooperate with any clear legal response, if the neo-Confederate uprising in Minnesota continues.

“Since the start of the Trump administration’s ‘Operation Metro Surge’ in Minnesota, federal prosecutors have reportedly charged 158 anti-ICE agitators with federal crimes, including ‘FACE Act violations, conspiracy charges, and obstruction of federal agents.’ Some of the offenses carry penalties of up to 20 years in prison.”[3]

The state of California has gone even further. Governor Gavin Newsom has granted approximately $1 billion to an army of nonprofits who: encourage unchecked numbers of migrants to enter the country; fight deportation orders in the courts; lead street protests against ICE; encourage the flow of migrants across the border; and provide them with “transportation, shelter, social services, and legal protection.”[4] ICE officers are routinely attacked, pelted with rocks and bottles, and doxed—the street-level version of the Democrat-elected officials who slander them as Nazis and fascists and promise to arrest them for the “crime” of enforcing federal immigration law (deliberately undermined throughout the Biden administration). Left-wing activists seek to use the issue of immigration to achieve the broader neo-Marxist vision of social revolution.

Leading politicians like Hillary Clinton also oppose ICE agents and express support for the rioters in Minneapolis. After condemning the Trump administration’s push to deport illegal alien criminals from Minneapolis, Clinton urged directing funding to the rioters. “In Minnesota, scores of ordinary people are bravely looking out for their neighbors, defending their communities, and protesting lawless violence,” she tweeted. “Here’s how to stand with them.” The list of groups that Hillary Clinton is promoting includes the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee (MIRAC), a core group behind the protests, whose members have been caught on video defending violence, and who received funding from the city of Minneapolis. Other funding organizations include the Neville Singham network funded by China-based former software exec Neville Singham; the Chinese-American Planning Council; and the Chinese Progressive Association—both of which have ties to the Chinese Communist Party’s overseas influence network. All of these groups oppose the work of ICE.

Expanded Insurrection

Since the Trump inauguration, ritualized left-wing street violence has become the norm—torching Tesla dealerships and cars, swarming ICE officers and facilities, and encouraging violent campus demonstrations on behalf of Hamas. These incidents are characterized by overt anti-Semitic rhetoric and encouragement to harass Jews. Indeed, Trump is now the only US President in history to be the target of three assassination attempts involving gunfire—with more than two years to go in his tenure as a target.

Abraham Lincoln invoked the Insurrection Act of 1807, when Confederates attacked the government troops stationed on Fort Sumter, which, alas, was soon followed by the Civil War. Trump has recently been musing about using the Insurrection Act, though hopefully not to start a new Civil War. In 1861 both sides were guilty: those who attacked Fort Sumter and those who defended it. Then-“Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that she ‘expects more arrests to come’ as the Justice Department is poised to crack down on similar anti-ICE insurgencies nationwide.” Are we close to the Insurrection act being employed?

How should citizens react? We cannot say that we have no word from God:

“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong.

Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good.

But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrong-doer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.” (Rom 13:1-5)

Rulers derive their authority from God, but what happens when rulers disagree among themselves about their authority? We must establish which authorities are the more superior and righteous. ICE officers seek (with Presidential authority) to put right the situation created in cities that have declared a non-cooperative right to resist the government. For years, our officials allowed thousands to come into the US unvetted. In addition, about 300,000 children were trafficked across the border. Who knows what awful things have been done to these precious children? Who should ever resist fixing some of these dramatic situations?

Why are we so slow to act? One reason is that whether at home or at school we have failed to teach our children the content of our Constitution. A good number of parents may hold extremely hostile notions due to trends in the culture. For example, in an interview on CNN, Steve Schmidt, a founder of the Lincoln Project on multiple assassination attempts stated: “I think that there’s one person, beyond and above all others, who’s responsible for poisoning the rhetoric in America. And that guy’s name is Donald Trump… He’s an insurrectionist, the foremost domestic enemy of the Constitution in American history. He is a vile and disgusting man.” [5]

Former Secret Service agent Jonathan Wackrow in a following interview did not point directly to Trump, but he described an “assassination culture”—a decentralized, digitally driven phenomenon in which grievance and ideology are reinforced in online echo chambers.” Indeed, Trump is now the only US President in our US history to be the target of three assassination attempts.

Twoism is a useful tool even for politics. The President, who is appointed by God, as Romans 13 affirms (see above) has a special role to play that we must honor. Obeying the President’s governing principles is the right thing to do, if he is not motivated by evil principles. ICE agents are applying the valid laws of the land, passed by Congress, even though ignored by the Biden administration, and therefore must be followed. To remind us of Scriptures clear instructions: “It is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.”(Rom 13:5)
